That if you are a Christian, you are a priest in God’s priesthood? We normally think of the Old Testament priests when we hear the word “priest”. These men were very important to God and He gave them specific instructions to follow when it came to serving Him. They could not do just anything that they desired and please God. Remember Nadab and Abihu? They were killed by God for not following His directions. (Leviticus 10)
It is an honor to serve God today in His church as a priest. Peter calls it a “royal priesthood”. (I Pet.2:9) Does that make you feel important? You are royalty in God’s eyes because you have chosen to serve Him in His temple, the church. You are called on to serve by offering up spiritual sacrifices to God, that is, the fruit of our lips that give thanks to His name. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:15-16)
You see, the Christian life is a life of sacrifice. Our Leader said He had come to this earth, not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus is referred to as our Great High Priest in Hebrews 4. He dispenses mercy and grace to those of us who belong to the priesthood.
I think you are like me and stand in need of help at times. The Hebrews writer says that we can come to the throne of God with all confidence because we have a High Priest who knows our weaknesses. He has been where we are and can sympathize with us. I hope this gives us great comfort!
