He was the king’s cupbearer and had the courage to go to the king and ask for a leave of absence to go and help his people. His request was granted and Nehemiah set out for Jerusalem.
Some of the things that he did may surprise you. I found a 3-point sermon that I really like.
Visualize – When he arrived in the city, he took three days and just walked around. We would say “he was checking out the situation.” I can see him taking out a scroll and making notes as to the best way of rebuilding the walls. Leaders in the church today need to visualize the best way to help the church grow.
Agonize – When he looked around, he mourned, wept, fasted and prayed. Oh, how he loved Jerusalem! When is the last time you showed that kind of emotion for the church? The good leader is not aloof to the problems of and in the church. He always has his finger on the church’s pulse.
Organize – Notice that Nehemiah didn’t just pray, he did something. He spent time figuring out which family would do the best job on that part of the wall.
Do you remember how long it took to rebuild the walls? 52 days!!! Do you remember why they finished it so fast? Nehemiah 4:6 says, “The people had a mind to work.” Read the entire book – you will be blessed.
